Genesis 21:26-28

“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

What is Potential? By definition, potential is a latent excellence or ability that may or may not be developed; a latent ability is that which is present but not visible. A potential is God given ability. In other words, there is a performing ability lying in the soul of every man. Base on the scripture above, God has completed creating other creatures before deciding to create man in his image and likeness. God took extra care in creating man in other for man to have relationship with him, carry his spirit, live in obedience to him, and show forth his praise and to worship him. God wanted man to honor and have fellowship with him; he wanted man to be rational and moral enough to abide by his word. At this point God was speaking in anticipation of the potentials he wants man to possess; God was speaking to their spirit man before the actual creation which took place in Genesis 2:7 “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” And Genesis 2:22-23“Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, for she was taken out of man.”

God wanted man to be productive, resourceful and creative; he wanted man to overpower anything and everything that will become opposition to man. Dearly beloved, man in this context represents you, when God created you, he wanted for you to be able to overcome unpleasant situation by bring them under subjection. Even before you were born God has deposited in you the potentials to overcome and subdue whatever will interfere with your destiny; that is your health, joy, progress, marriage, career, business, education and even your salvation. God gave you the potential to have dominion because even before creation he knew that the earth will become chaotic at some point and you will make enemies therefore he gave you the potentials to replenish, subdue and have dominion over the earth.

HOW DO I EXHIBIT MY POTENTIALS YOU MAY ASK? Child of God, you were created and born to succeed both physically and spiritually by exhibiting your full potentials. God wants you to have a say in your own destiny. Genesis 2:19-20 says “Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animalsand all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.”

Child of God, note the phrase in the above scripture ‘and whatever the man called each living creature that was its name.’ that is to say, God transferred his divine potential to man. The same way God demonstrated His sovereign dominion over his creation in verse 3 of Genesis chapter 1 which records “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” So did He relinquished that authority and dominion to Adam however Adam lost that authority by yielding to the lies of Satan but Jesus through his death and resurrection gave that same authority and dominion back to you and I. Hallelujah!

It might interest you to know child of God that in the Semitic world, the naming of something or someone was the token of lordship. For instance, in Numbers 32:37-42, Reuben and the children of Manasseh changed the names of the cities of the Amorities after they had conquered them thereby asserting their lordship over them. Numbers 32:37-42 “And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair. And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.” Also, in 2 Kings 23:34 Pharaoh Necho changed the name of Eliakim king of Judea to Jehoiakim after he defeated him. 2 Kings 23:34 “ Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, and there he died.”

What does this say to you child of God? As Adam assert his authority and God giving potentials so also you can because a better Adam lives in you. There is more in you than you know. You carry the same creative ability of God because you were made in his image and in his likeness therefore you must operate in a very high level of divine intelligence. Just like Adam, you should and must have a say in your destiny because God gave you a divine empowerment at creation and all you need do is to activate that power house in you through the name of Jesus.

MAY HIS JOY FILL YOUR HEART!
