Jeremiah 31:31-34

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

1 Peter 2: 9-10

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthold, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light; which in time past where not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtain mercy, but now have obtained mercy”

WHAT IS COVENANT?

A covenant is a promise, an agreement or a testament between one person and another. And based on this teaching, a covenant is a promise, an agreement, or a testament between God and you if you are born again. The above topic ‘my spiritual birthright in the covenant’ will end our series on covenant and to fully understand this teaching, I encourage you to read the first two teachings titled ‘the old covenant and I’ and ‘my place in the new covenant’. In my first teaching, I did say that Jeremiah 31 is a document of prophetic promise specifically meant for the house of Israel and the house of Judah; a promise that has eventually extended to the gentiles that is you and I. Before the existence of this prophetic document God entered into a covenant with Israel under the leadership of Moses and under this covenant, blessing was conditional upon obedience according to Exodus 15:26, man was the mediator according to Leviticus 16:5-34 and atonement of sin was by the blood of animals; that old covenant failed because man could not obey its rudiments. In my second teaching tilted ‘my place in the new covenant’ I told you that Jesus Christ brought you and I into this covenant in anticipation of his death and shedding of his blood according to Luke 22:20 ‘this cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for and 1 Corinthians 11:25 says “after the same manner also he took the cup when supper was ended saying ‘this cup is the new testament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me” and based on the new covenant, the believers place in the new covenant is a life of unadulterated holiness.

Now let’s consider the topic: ‘my spiritual birthright in the covenant’. The question now is WHAT IS A BIRTHRIGHT?

According to the Webster dictionary, a birthright is any right or privilege to which a person is entitled by birth. Such right and privilege can also be given to an adopted child in the absence of a biological child. Before anyone can claim right and privilege of son-ship to another person, there should have existed proof of belonging and a committed relationship. John 1:12-13 says ”Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God× ; children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” And Romans 8:14-16 says “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to son-ship. And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

The birthright I am talking about is the right and privileges that belong to those who are born og God. Just so you know beloved of God, you are created by God does not mean you are born of God. The Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and idol worshippers and even the spiritualist and church goers are all created by God however they are not born of God. So! WHO IS BORN OF GOD? Those born of God are those in John 1:12-13 and Romans 8:14-16. These scriptures clearly states that those born of God is not through good works, church or religious membership and believes but one is born of God by receiving Him and by believing in His name. Simply put to be born of God, you must receive Him and be led by His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the one that brings you into a relationship with the father; he is the one that led you to your spiritual inheritance. Therefore, if you detach from the Holy Spirit you will lose everything including your friendship and relationship with God. Having established your son ship to God, what is your spiritual birthright? This I shall discuss next week.

UNTIL THEN MAY HIS JOY FILL YOUR HEART...
